"I think I was quite foolish. Andy Lau was quite shocked and told me to take it a litte easier. Now, I still have those crazy compulsions."
After Dicky filmed "Journey to the West" and gained popularity, his relationship suffered with TVB because of issues with renewing his contract. "I was supposed to act in the sequel, but they gave the role to someone else. At the time, I went away to Beijing to film for Miss Hong Kong. When I returned, my relationship with TVB was very tense. Afterwards, 'Fong Sai Yuk' enjoyed good ratings and rattled TVB. ATV treated me very well and gave me a lot of work, asking me to guest star on Miss Asia. Wong Jing told me, 'It's time for you to amend your ties with TVB. You should be more generous.'"
"The next day, I phoned TVB executive management. I said I wanted to go on 'Super Trio' to win some prizes. He realized my intentions and welcomed me back. I have insulted even big companies like TVB, but in this world, you don't have an enemy forever." Dicky said that now he especially respects TVB. After filming a series, he would let TVB look at it first. "If they are interested in purchasing the rights, I would give it to them and participate in all the promotions. If ATV or I-Cable ask me, I would have to think about it first."
Refusing to Direct for Wong Jing Last year, when TVB broadcast "Kung Fu Soccer," the ratings were not good. There were rumors saying that Dicky complained the time slot was too close to "Kung Fu Hustle," making people think he was copying Stephen Chow.
"I never complained about the time slot. I care about which director, action director, production budget, other actors etc. But after filming, I don't care about other things. If I care about even broadcasting time, then I will give other people a lot of trouble."
Dicky is one of those actors who has a lot of influence. Many scriptwriters and directors use his input and jokes in the actual filming. Since "A Step Beyond," Dicky has incorporated his own jokes into his series. He expects that with any director he works with. "Sometimes I have no input and the director would be surprised and wonder if it's because I don't like the series."
Although Dicky likes to be a creative actor, he has no interest to be a director himself. "Wong Jing asked me many times to direct for him. But it's a risk I'm not willing to take. 'Cheung Wai Kin' is an established brand in TV. If I were to direct a movie and fail in the process, I can't risk that."
I Bring You, You Bring Me The purpose of this interview is to announce that Dicky has a new series coming up and will release an album as well.
When Dicky won the 3rd annual singing contest at TVB, that kick-started his career. When Dicky receives a good song and doesn't know how to sing it, he would take it to Andy Hui and ask him for pointers. "Andy's music experience is better than mine. When I received the song, "Health," I took it to Andy. It was very obvious that he was salivating for the song himself, but he taught me to sing it simply."
Dicky values his friendships very much. When William So Wing Hong's career dived, Dicky tried to help him out. For example, if someone asked him to perform in a concert and Dicky has no time, he would recommend William So. "We always did this. When Andy had a concert in the US, he brought Ng Kwok King. When I entered M8, I brought Andy. When I film, I bring Andy. When he sings, he brings me. We all care about our 'brothers' and hope each one other has more opportunities."
Many things may change, like the singing contest has stopped. But their friendship will not change; it is a well known anchor in this industry.
Dicky with his first girlfriend Kong Yan Yeen. Kong has married and retired from the industry.
With Jessica Hsuan. Jessica is one of the 3 girlfriends that Dicky has publicly revealed. At the time, Dicky's career was spiraling to a low point while Jessica increased in popularity.
