+:Dicky's article by Jaynestars.com (2006)#1 :+

Dicky Cheung Wai Kin - With many things, there are gains and losses. Dicky Cheung Wai Kin has dated Cheung Sai for 7 years and there have been many rumors about them breaking up, then making up. The latest rumor is that they are ready to get married anytime, as soon as they have free time.
"When a couple is separated half the time [due to work], it's normal that they considered breaking up," Dicky said calmly.

However when discussing ratings for his series, Dicky seems to be more anxious. "Now I am more calm. In the past, I was very concerned and would check ratings every day, sometimes losing sleep." This year, Dicky has entered the stage of protecting his career. The time that he was ratings King 2 years ago has passed. "How do I show that I value the Cantonese market? Most Hong Kong actors, no matter how poor their Mandarin is, will speak in Mandarin during filming in hopes of matching the mouth movements during dubbing. However, I won't. My jokes are derived from Cantonese. During dubbing for Mandarin, I will just try to translate the joke. I've fought over this dialect issue in the past."

Together Little, Separated Often; Dicky Thought About Breaking Up - Dicky and his girlfriend, Cheung Sai, has talked about breaking up. But they are doing well lately and Dicky is thinking about marriage.

"We have been together for 6-7 years and broke up many times. It should be cherished that we are still together. I give myself a lot of credit. Over the last 6-7 years, half the time, we are separated and can only talk on the phone (at its peak, Dicky's phone bill cost $80,000 HKD). We trust each other, however having problems and break-ups in-between is normal."

"Without your girlfriend by your side long-term, when you need her the most and she's not there, how do you handle it as an actor? Sometimes I'm very bored and receive a call from a female actress. I can only tell myself to hold back. I'm glad that Andy Hui and I have a healthy hobby: playing pool. We can play pool for the whole night. For example if I finish work at 7 pm, and I have nothing to do, I have a right to go out to dinner with a female. We can go to a place where there are guaranteed no reporters. After dinner, we can either go to her place or my hotel. But many times, I would go out with Andy Hui instead. I'll order Hainan chicken and after chatting with him, we'll play pool together. The night passes very quickly and getting back at 12 midnight, I sleep until the morning."

Dicky and Cheung Sai often argue over free time. When there is a break, Cheung Sai wants to go on vacation but Dicky wants to relax. It is very easy for the issue to spark their break-up conversations. "In the past, she will always want to go to Tokyo for shopping. To me, shopping is even more tiring than work. Luckily over time, she changed. Now she likes to tan in the sun. You know how most women don't like to tan at all. In the past I wouldn't go shopping with her. But now, I will wait in the car and she goes shopping by herself."

The 68th Floor Is Too High - When Dicky was a teenager, his father left home. He started working after Form 4 and has experienced 3 ups and 3 downs in his entertainment career. Now he is renting a luxury apartment on the 68th floor with an ocean view.

"Now I purposely take the bus from Admiralty to Central and will buy sneakers in Mongkok. I can ask my assistant to buy it for me. Except for unsuccessful actors, most actors will try to distance themselves from the masses. In the past, I lived close to many bars. At night you can hear the customers causing trouble and there would be police. My apartment was very close to the street. If I put my head outside the window, I can see their expressions and see their faces. Now my current apartment is on the 68th floor. At first, I enjoyed the amazing ocean view. But after awhile, I realized the sky is enormous, the ocean is quiet, and I am very far from people on the street. Everday when I take the elevator home, I have enough time to write a short text message on the phone. You can imagine how far it is."
Thinking that living far from the streets of everyday people, the jokes in his tv series will be difficult to capture the livelihood of the masses.

Dicky and Nic Tse's "Twin of Brothers" was broadcast at ATV with poor ratings. Dicky can't hold on to his record of breaking tv ratings. "When this series was broadcast in China and Taiwan, the ratings were very good. If every time I were to broadcast on TVB, then maybe I should open my own tv channel? Now I can't just look at one market. However if I don't do well in the China market, then I will have to worry."

Letting Go of M8's Backed-up Salary - Dicky was at his lowest point when he bought a house to rent out. The value of his house dropped by $30 million dollars after he bought it. His cash flow was very tight and he had no more than $10,000 in his bank account at one time. But he still had to pay more than $100,000 in mortgage. He was close to bankrupcy. Luckily his brother borrowed money from a friend and was able to help him out.
"When I bought the multi-million dollar home, I only thought about it for 15 minutes in the make-up studio. My younger brother asked me if I wanted to buy it. I didn't even see the place and said I would buy it."

When Dicky was struggling financially, he came back with "Fong Sai Yuk" and signed with a new managment company. He gained back the money he lost. "You can say I'm useless. When my career dropped a few times, I can come back and become more popular than before. But I lost out when I bought the house. I am afraid to buy property again and will only put money in my savings account."

Dicky has no confidence in properties but as to his own worth, he is certain. Accordingly, his new contract with his new managing company is worth $20 million and Dicky has asked for cash payment before signing on. Even if his previous managing company, M8, is behind in salary payments, Dicky can let it go.

"If M8's financial position is good, I would definitely chase the payments. But I know they are not doing well, so I let it go. (Rumors say that they owe you $5 million?) No, not that much."

"For example in the past, I rented out an apartment. The tenant's business failed and owed me several months in rent. My brother asked me whether we should sue him. In the past, he always paid his rent on time. Now his financial position is weak. Should we push him to the point that he kills himself? You have to let some things go. Maybe in the future, my fiances suffer and he becomes a millionare, I might need his help."
